The 7 habits of a highly ineffective me

If you have an incredible idea for a book but want to spend all day, every day avoiding writing it, just follow these 7 highly ineffective habits that I’ve incorporated into my daily life. *These are also ideal habits for anything else you’d prefer not to accomplish.

#1- Have OCD. I personally start out every morning in an awesome go-get-em-tiger state of mind. I make sure that I start the day positively by mentally listing everything that I’m grateful for before I even get out of bed, because I once read a book that said it’s good to do that. Now I feel like if I neglect to do this one morning, everything I love and care about will catch on fire or die. Then I’d really regret having not been mentally grateful for all that stuff and all those people because, due to my criminal negligence, they’d be all burnt up, smelly and dead.

The next item on my obsessive compulsive agenda is to read and comment on anybody’s blog who has ever, in the history of my blog, left me a comment. Because if I don’t do that every single day they will all hate me and tell the entire world what a mean and evil dick I am.

#2- Begin a dysfunctional relationship with a website. I began my affair with Rapture Ready over a year ago and it’s been a nasty ride. I used to visit because I found those freaks entertaining. Then instead of being entertained by RR I became all angry and sweary every time I stopped by, but I kept going back anyway. Finally I had enough drama and broke off the relationship vowing to never return for the sake of my very soul.

But I just couldn’t stay away. RR is like a bad drug or a really ugly girl who is really good at fellatio. Now every time I’m ready to write my book I’m all like, “Well it couldn’t hurt to just peek and see what the crazy typers are typing today.” Then by the time I get out of there I’m all angry and sweary again.

#3- Have pets. Every single time I sit down to write my book my dog puts his ball by my feet and wants me to kick it for him. Then he wants me to do it again and again forever. Or instead, my cat will look at me in an irresistibly cute way until I get his ‘stick with a string tied to it’ toy and play with him. This makes Kitty love me more than he loves Wifey, which is an added bonus.

#4- Be an exercise freak.  I believe that if I don’t exercise for at least an hour a day, and sit in the sun for an hour a day I will become obese and turn translucently white overnight. Then my teeth would probably fall out too. I’m already getting old, and I haven’t exactly overachieved (like I thought I would) in my life, and am slowly going bald one year at a time.

So if I allow myself to become a pasty white, fat, toothless, bald guy, loser then everyone will hate me. People would probably find me so repulsive that they’d throw uncooked hot-dogs at my face for laughs. Every hot-dog would hit me because I wouldn’t be fast enough to block them. And they’d probably even poke me with a stick or tie me to a chair and make me eat spaghetti until I died. Then the crime scene people would have to cut down a wall of my dilapidated warehouse-like apartment just to get my gigantic body out while laughing at me the whole time.

#5- Write a blog. It’s a perfect way to make light of a serious situation where nothing of any substance or monetary value ever gets done. It’s very cathartic though, and even more so when everyone leaves comments telling me how awesome and amazing I actually am. Then I feel really proud and happy and know that I never have to change anything!

#6- Have ADD. Every time I start to do something I become distracted and immediately want to be doing something else. As soon as I start writing my book, I realize that I’m probably overdue for a blog post. Then I have to go interneting to look for some interesting material. And as long as I’m in the neighborhood, I might as well stop in on Rapture Ready. But then I realize that I’m getting really angry and sweary again so I leave, vowing never to go back.

Then I wonder if anyone has left a new comment on my last blog, or ‘OOHH I wonder if anyone ‘liked’ my last status  update on Facebook or better yet left a witty comment?

While I’m already on here I might as well ‘like’ and comment on everyone I’ve ever met’s status updates to build some good karma for my future status updates!’

Then before I know it, it’s time to exercise and sit in the sun again.

#7- Have a caffeine addiction. Being the addict that I am I always think to myself, “I’ll just have 2 shots of espresso with a Red Bull chaser then I’ll be all geared up to write my book.” This only makes my OCD and especially my ADD (and possibly my hypochondria if I don’t really have OCD or ADD) exponentially worse, so I decide I’d better just exercise instead. Then I come back but am unable to sit still and write due to my exploding adrenal gland, so I decide to play with the ‘stick with a string tied to it’ toy to make the cat love me even more.

Because the cat will still love me even when I’m a pasty white, fat, toothless, bald guy. Unless the cat’s all burnt up because I forgot to be grateful for him one morning.

  3. So I am guessing the book will be a short story 😦

Blahaahaha, I miss read this sentence, I thought it said “my dog puts his BALLS by my feet and wants me to kick it for him.”

Psst Might want to just get a dictaphone.

  4. I got a bestseller in my head but I’m dumb and lazy. That’s all.

I also like to think that there are way more things in this world ineffective than effective, so your way OK in my book.

    Comment by Micky-T | May 16, 2010 | Reply

    • A bestseller? You’ll have to tell me about that bad boy sometime. Or is it the one you told me about before?

I agree with you sentiments on effectiveness. I’m so far past caring honestly. As long as I don’t end up broke and homeless I’ll be forever content.

      Thanks Micky!!

  6. This entry is absolutely hilarious!! It actually is. I so understand the ever lasting struggle of having this energy and wanting to get on with the one thing you should get on with, but then…. do something else instead! I ususally get the weird feeling that I need to sort of charge myself up for the really big task I want to tackle by getting everything else out the way. What I then realise in the evening when I go to bed and think about what a loser day I lived today is that all these little tasks I did before tackling the big one weren’t even tasks. Oh god it’s so confusing to be lazy sometimes. Haha. Write that book. I would read it. Probably also to distract me from starting to work on that short documentary I have got planned 😉

    Comment by anewlookingglass | May 16, 2010 | Reply

    • Thanks for all of your kind words! I’ve found that the most effective way for me to accomplish what I want to accomplish in any given time period is to make a list. Otherwise there is no hope in hell. I’m just too easily distracted. I don’t think either one of us are lazy….per sea..

      Thanks Anewlookingglass!!

The blog I started two or three weeks ago has somehow grown to a collection of 25 articles and stories of over 30,000 words. There are many other tasks that would be a more productive use of my writing… and I suppose that many words is nearly half a novel! Good thing I don’t have a dog.

  9. Why, Scott, you just described my perfect day, only in my world, after running in the sun (two-fer), I *vacuum* because if I don’t vacuum every day the Earth will stop spinning on it’s axis and chaos will reign. It’s my duty to the People of the World to vacuum.

Yeah, my book is festering in a folder on my desktop. As long as I keep up with my real-life scientist job I can hide my secret identity as a wannabe novelist.

Wait! Is that a dust bunny!? Gotta run!

  10. Scott, that reads like a private shrinks ideal patient; loads of pathology, years of treatment, bugger all chance of getting better but almost no risk of doing any harm to others. Were I still registered to so do…

I have epublished three whole novellas and screeds of short stories, I enjoyed doing them, the odd(??) person has called by them and they have otherwise been totally ignored by the world. But I have the satisfaction of knowing that they are out there… so get your arse in gear boyyooo!

    • Would you believe that I’ve never been to a shrink in my life Dave? I pretty much cured what was once probably borderline (for real) OCD. I think I’ve told you about that. It would be my dream to have access to that magic prescription pad of yours though…ever prescribe a morphine drip for ADD? Please?

I’m humbled by your publishing success. Maybe someday…if I slow down on the coffee…

Congratulations! Is this really all because your blog was featured on Freshly Pressed? Your friends are right, you’ll soon be too BIG to reply to all your readers (that would be some sucky karma if you were stuck at your computer all day). You’re talented and entertaining enough for this momentum to continue. Though I’m a latecomer, (thanks to Freshly Pressed) I’m glad I wandered in just before you took off (“I knew him when…” ). And you ARE selling something: YOU, the writer. Way to go.

As for stopping by my place soon… I haven’t published yet. I’ve not even a fledgling blog. Still obsessing over finding The Perfect Theme on WordPress’s menu. Can sooo relate to “The 7 Habits…” You’re way ahead of me.

I have to ask myself, though, what it means that I re-read this line:

“dog puts his ball by my feet and wants me to kick it for him” 4 times!

because the first time I read it I was sure it said “dog puts his ballS by my feet and wants me to kick them for him.” I swear to God I had to go back 4 times just to be certain.

  45. Scott, this is an astoundingly good post, which nails down your average blogger in more ways than one. I always think I’m going to sit down at the computer, finish up a few posts and queue them up, in order to finally “relax.”

Then it’s hours of distraction and an 11th hour return to whip one (one!) post into shape before crawling into bed and snoozing for a few hours before work the next morning. I don’t think its ADD/OCD. I think it’s the damn internet, always hanging around and being generally distracting.

This one hits a bit close to home:

“The next item on my obsessive compulsive agenda is to read and comment on anybody’s blog who has ever, in the history of my blog, left me a comment. Because if I don’t do that every single day they will all hate me and tell the entire world what a mean and evil dick I am.”

I’m no good at that. I assume that several commenters who have stopped in a few times have already left and spread the word about what a colossal dick I am, because I haven’t shown the decency to comment on their respective blogs.

I apologize to all of you in advance and in arrears. I tend to go a little long with my comments (I can hear the band firing up the “get the hell off the stage” theme now…) and I have issues with just leaving a simple “Great post!”

So it’s a time issue, but I’m sure most of the commenters for whom I haven’t thrown in my quid for their quo would probably be happy with just such a gesture.

Feel free to rain hate down upon me, fellow bloggers. It’s not like my blog is better or more worthwhile than yours. I think this also explains why Scott’s comment threads run into the 30’s and 40’s and mine top out at about half that.

Comment by Capitalist Lion Tamer | May 17, 2010 | Reply

    • I do the same thing CLT. I figured that I’d do the Door posts and some other light stuff while I finished some work projects and knocked a chunk out of my book. But after I get one queued up and ready to go I quit doing anything productive at all. I did finish a bit of ‘real’ work though.

You know, I read a lengthy article about how commercials, and especially the internet is causing a new form of ADD, and being a hypochondriac, I was like, “oohh, I have that!” I probably don’t have the real thing but you never know.

I know the rest of your comment is mostly directed at the masses but I hope these people know how much I exaggerate. Although, I honestly do try to stop in on my regulars almost every day. Just like I return phone calls and emails. It is a compulsion.

If anyone deserves the accolades and front page press it’s you. Because like I’ve said many times before; you is a funny mother fucker!

      Thanks CLT!!

It’s so easy to run into a rough spot that needs work, and zoom off into blog world or play Wizard 101 with my daughter or entertain the pets. Damn. I should just work on a typewriter, but . . . OH! I’m so stressed from work, despite of my age, i couldn’t resist my insanity as 19 year old poor-in-English-grammar-girl. I always wanted to spend time for exercise but I’m afraid of what people may tell about me. It’s just the computer and my chums who knew how addicted I am to blogs and other networking sites. The way it felt to have new comments for what you’ve done either negative or what, it counts. I also have a hard time in maintaining a relationship coz I’m freaking out. I can’t prioritize those stuffs. I don’t have my own computer, I just rent outside yet I always assure to open and update all my sites. You’re my inspiration in every goal I find no ease at all and turns to be so unfeasible. Hope our paths will meet when I got my new wordpress site and very own laptop. Thanks buddy, God bless. Nox!

For example, I actually wrote this last year when I was wondering what I should do next for another project I was working on but just couldn’t seem to get started.

Serendipity strikes and here it is – the perfect spot to put this comment in it’s proper place.

  106. Scott. Depends on your durability to get down and write.
Yeh, there is a good reason why not to throw time away writing to sell. It took me seven years, with old mechanical type writers, between 400 odd hours a month oilfield work.
I was lucky to get a good agent in London, so painfully, sold a number of short stories, eventually, till the short story market fell out, in the 80’s and on. But it has come back now, the short story market, and then there are computers to write on, and a good demand though so many people are now writing.

And as others have said – it’s like you are in my head. I can’t sit still, have ocd tendencies and adult ADD for sure – it’s actually paralyzing most of the time. I’m a business owner who should be doing homework for a class I paid to take and here I am, 3 days from the weekly class, I’ve checked facebook, wrote a blog post and found YOU! I’ll be back. Oh, and I have a cat that desperately wants to be on my lap right now. Love your blog.

I also try to avoid spending too much time playing with the cat because she will become lazy and never develop her own inner resources – and nobody likes a cat who can’t keep themself entertained. (Or, as I’m constantly telling her, a cat who reads Proust. It makes her seem pretentious -as if she thinks she’s better than everyone else. Try getting her to listen though.)

  128. I always visit Freshly Pressed to read whatever blogs look interesting.

As a fellow OCDer+procrastinator+caffeine abuser+middle-aged, I can tell you this really cracked me up.

Who am I kidding? I’m past middle age unless I’m going to live to be 110. 50 is really not the new 20.

That’s what I mean. I relate. I used to play solitaire on the computer until I won. I couldn’t quit until I won even if it took 5 hours and I couldn’t not play every day. It would bring me bad luck. No idea why.

I’ve turned on most of my FaceBook friends and post snide comments on their walls now. Maybe I’m not OCD. Maybe I have a personality disorder.

Can’t wait for the book. And you don’t have to go to my blog because it’s just all photos. I started doing the Daily Shoot but for some reason have not become obsessive about that and miss days.

I was at first but during the winter when 2/3 of the country was having a blizzard the assignment was to shoot the horizon. I couldn’t even see the railing on my deck. That excused me from having to shoot obviously stupid assignments which I determine depending on whether I’m in the mood for them or not.

Sorry for the long post.I can’t seem to stop.

  140. I was going to post a comment last week when you were up to 200 + comments, but then my computer crashed and I got side-tracked. Now, I’m back and the comments have zoomed to 315! You are the only person I know of who has a “gratefulness ritual” other than myself. My ritual was always performed right before sleep though. I gradually stopped doing it a year ago (after falling asleep for a decade of ‘counting my blessings’ so to speak). My first ‘thanks’ is always reserved for being able to give thanks in the first place. There is so, so much to be grateful for and being aware of the multitude of ‘life’s gifts’ keeps me humble, grounded and well, grateful. We are all lucky sonofabitches in one fashion or another.

    • Elizabeth! I’ve been waiting since forever for you to show up here. I didn’t know what I had to do to lure you over here. If I would’ve known it was the gratitude listing, I would have written about that ages ago.

I’ve always devoured books, and even self help type books are no exception. The one thing that they all have in common is telling you to appreciate and be thankful for what you have and you will be given more. And I’ve certainly seen that principle in action…it’s all what you focus on.

We are all incredibly lucky and blessed even to be able to experience consciousness. I’m so glad you stopped by. I hope that you come back often!

      Thanks Elizabeth!!

  141. Scott, OMG! I was going to say the exact same thing about consciousness! We think alike! BTW, I linked onto your site via our mutual friend, CLT.

  143. WHAT!?! The ‘horizontal mambo’ didn’t make your top 7?

“Every single time I sit down to write my book my dog puts his ball by my feet and wants me to kick it for him. Then he wants me to do it again and again forever.” I have to admit, I read ‘balls’ the first time as well. Does that make me sick & twisted that I lol’d?

Your stories are hilarious. Thanks for the laughs.

    • Sex? That doesn’t happen often enough to be a major distraction for me. Twice a week isn’t nearly as bad as the 25 times a day that I have to do all the other stuff.

      Thanks RxThree!!

  146. Hi,
You really make me laugh with your writing. Loved your comment on Lisa’s OCDgirl blog about offending everyone equally.
I have OCD too. I don’t have ADD, but I think my husband has it for me – every time I start to do something, he says, “I need t-shirts and socks – no laundry today?”

Re your “habits”, it reminded me of when I drove around the same corners 3 or 4 times, to check whether I ran over anyone! If I didn’t see police cars, I figured I was OK.
Now, it makes me laugh just to write about it, but it’s a lot of work, having OCD!
